This is probably my favorite Olympic lift variation—the power snatch done from the hips (aka "the pocket").
Hip power snatches teach you to generate aggressive force FAST with minimal wind-up and minimal distance over which to impart force into the bar. They build explosive power where it counts.
These are great for athletes who need real pop off the line or in a jump...or really for pretty much anything! If you can throw body weight (or more) overhead from this short range, your full body power is on another level.
Try starting with a light weight and working 3-4 sets of 4-6 reps, while slowly building the weight up over time.
As proficiency increases you can switch to repeat triples, which is probably the sweet spot for general power gains on this exercise.
Testing the waters with a heavy triple or heavy single every now and then when you have the skill to do so is also a lot of fun!
How much can YOU do?
