Clockwork advertising automaton. Made in Paris circa 1900. The automaton was used to promote books which were placed next to it, the finger pointing at the cover. When wound the Clown moves his head backwards and forward in an affirmative gesture. The clockwork is of long duration and in excellent condition. Unusually this automaton is in totally original condition with piercing blue glass eyes and extraordinary painted stage make up.

The underside of the base carries the name and address of the Bookshop whose window he inhabited at 22 Rue Dauphine in Paris.
