🚩Why don’t we need white paint when painting with watercolor?
One of the biggest mindset shifts when moving from opaque painting mediums like acrylics or oils into watercolor is understanding that watercolor works in a completely different way.
With opaque mediums, we usually build lighter areas by adding lighter paint on top. But with watercolor, the paper itself becomes the source of light. ✨
Instead of covering the entire surface, we plan ahead for highlights and preserve those bright areas from the very beginning.
That’s why watercolor often feels like the “opposite” painting process compared to opaque mediums. We’re constantly thinking about transparency, dilution, and allowing the white of the paper to shine through our washes to create luminous, glowing results.
And this is exactly why white paint usually isn’t needed at all. 🙌
