Hell Rising | Part 1: A Fortress in Ruins
I did say that we'd be coming back and we are. Welcome to the first expansion for Nioh 3, Hell Rising.
Hell Rising takes place in the 17th century, the year 1651 CE. Taking place after the events of Nioh 3, Shogun Tokugawa Takechiyo adopts the name Iemitsu. One day, Iemitsu dreamt of a three-headed yokai. Knowing the beast to be an omen of ill fortune, he sets out hoping to find clues to avert an inevitable disaster.
This ends up taking him forward in time, to the mid 17th century. He finds the fortress in complete ruin so we got to fight. But eventually we take on someone who thinks we're a fraud. He states that Takechiyo had passed away. The man, Yagyu Jubei, faces us in battle and he has two guardian spirits.
Yagyu Jubei is the definition of brutal. Very brutal. If you haven't completed the game in New Game+, you're in for a hell of a butt-whooping. I learned this lesson the hard way. It was a wake up call because I should have grinded. Jubei has two guardian spirits: one wind, one water. You will need to focus on being on the move and striking hard. Timing is everything. One mistake and you'll get whacked but if you're paitient, you'll persevere.
We beat him and obtain a new weapon type: Hoko & Shields and Ninja Hoko & Shields. Not only that but we tell him that we traveled through time. But someone stops the fight, a man named Rodrigo, from Spain. But it's also here we gain a new spirit from Jubei, Tora Gozen, along with some backstory. Turns out there's trouble in Edo. Many ronin banded together and after our death, Edo was engulfed in rebellion. Rioters stormed the castle town, quelling the soldiers. But we learn who's behind it all, Yui Shosetsu. He harbors a serious grudge. Made worse is that the Crucible, once gone, has returned. It gets worse. People with strange powers start showing up. Even foreigners too. He heard that strange people were spotted at a place called Chokodo. Heading there may find answers.
So we got some work to do and we are properly welcomed to Nioh 3: Hell Rising. Yep. Guess we got a whole lot of work to do huh?
