Film Score and More | Night at the Museum Score: Study Up On History + Imprint Larry's Key @FilmScoreandMore | Uploaded July 2019 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
For this score experiment of Alan Silvestri’s “Study Up On History,” I had to refer to two alternate orchestrations of this song in the score sheets: versions 4m26 r2 and 4m26r3. The former was missing the softer part of the song at the beginning with the strings and piano so I ended up using the latter for most of the transcription. The end of the song is also a separate cue titled “Imprint Larry’s Key” and is marked as 4m27 in the score.
I chose to do cover this song because it contains a nice, breezy reprise of the main theme. I’ve also tried “Sunrise/Morning Morph” but I don’t think it’s quite ready, even though it’s substantially shorter. Despite being the fastest part of the song, the main theme in the middle took the longest to put in because of all the scales and the constant crescendos and diminuendos. Almost every instrument had to get louder in one measure and softer in the next. It’s very easy to overlook things in such a large orchestration so I also had to go back and fix some mistakes.
Finally, I had some issues with the loudness of some instruments, in particular the violas in the opening, the bass clarinet, the contrabass clarinet, and the horns. I decided to adjust their respective dynamics to get something a little more cooperative with the other instruments, usually so they would never drown any others out but the horns were actually made louder at some point.
