A specifically engineered non-pneumatic (airless) tire (NPT) from Goodyear was created with the goal of extending tire life and lowering maintenance requirements.

While air-filled tires will always have a use, various solutions are required for various purposes. Autonomous vehicles, for instance, might profit from an airless tire's maintenance-free feature while other vehicles might still choose a regular tire.

According to Michael Rachita, senior program manager for non-pneumatic tires at Goodyear, "the company's non-pneumatic tire research effort is wrapped under a technology ambitious aim to produce the first 100% sustainable material and maintenance-free tire on the market by 2030."
