The BMW Plant Regensburg is now the first auto assembly facility in the world to use an automated, end-to-end digital procedure for inspecting, rework processing, and marking painted vehicle surfaces. Each vehicle is put through a special procedure by AI-controlled robots to ensure that it satisfies objective quality requirements, resulting in steady operations, reduced lead times, and consistently high-quality surface finishes. It is the first automobile facility in the world to employ the AI-based process on this scale, and it has been in serial production since March 2022 under the name Automated Surface Processing. The new approach delivers superior quality with stability and reproducibility, quicker lead times, and effective deviation detection. The BMW Group is progressing toward its digital and intelligent linked factory, BMW iFACTORY, thanks to the cloud storage of all acquired data, which enables the best analysis of causalities.
