The Volkswagen Tayron is not a newcomer to the brand's lineup, having first been introduced in China back in 2018. Now, it is making its debut in Europe, and it is more than just a fresh nameplate. Essentially, the Tayron serves as a seven-seat version of the newest Tiguan, stepping in for the previous Tiguan Allspace model that was available in Europe. This introduction also offers a glimpse of what is to come for the United States, where the compact three-row crossover will keep the Tiguan name.

Positioned between the Tiguan and the larger Touareg—an SUV not available in the United States—the Tayron offers versatility. While it can be configured with three rows of seating, it is not limited to that setup. A two-row variant is also available, similar to the Skoda Kodiaq. Visually, the Tayron does not stray far from the design language of the Tiguan. In fact, it is best described as a slightly stretched version of the Tiguan, offering more space for passengers and cargo.

The Tayron is 187.8 inches (4,770 millimeters) long, making it around nine inches (231 millimeters) longer than the Tiguan. To create room for a third row of seating, the wheelbase has been extended by approximately 4.5 inches (114 millimeters) to 109.8 inches (2,791 millimeters). The width measures 72.9 inches (1,852 millimeters), and the height stands at 65.3 inches (1,660 millimeters), which makes it a bit larger than the standard Tiguan.

With this size, the Tayron is highly practical. Its cargo space varies depending on the seating configuration. In the three-row version, you get around 12.2 cubic feet (345 liters) behind the last row. The two-row model provides a more generous 31.2 cubic feet (885 liters). If you fold down the second row, cargo space increases significantly to 73.8 cubic feet (2,090 liters) in the two-row model and 67.2 cubic feet (1,905 liters) in the three-row version.

However, choosing the hybrid model slightly reduces cargo space due to the battery pack's size. It offers around 24.9 cubic feet (705 liters) with the seats up and 67.6 cubic feet (1,915 liters) when they are folded down. Importantly, the hybrid version is available only with two rows of seats, providing a more efficient but slightly less spacious option.

All Tayron models come equipped with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. The plug-in hybrid models have a six-speed transmission, while the conventionally powered models come with a seven-speed version. The hybrid models are front-wheel drive only, as are the base gasoline and diesel versions. At entry level, the SUV features a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, which produces 148 horsepower and 184 pound-feet (250 Newton-meters) of torque. This engine includes mild-hybrid technology, allowing it to operate on just two cylinders during low-demand situations to save fuel.

The diesel options include a 2.0-liter TDI engine available in two configurations. The first matches the 1.5-liter gasoline engine's 148 horsepower but delivers a stronger 266 pound-feet (360 Newton-meters) of torque. A more powerful version with all-wheel drive delivers 201 horsepower and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque. Additionally, two 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline options are available, offering either 148 or 261 horsepower.

As diesel engines have become less popular in Europe, many customers are opting for plug-in hybrids. The Tayron offers two plug-in hybrid options, delivering either 201 or 268 horsepower. Both models combine a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor and share a 19.7 kilowatt-hour battery pack that supports DC charging at up to 50 kilowatts. A full charge allows for more than 62 miles (100 kilometers) of electric driving. Combined with a full gasoline tank, the Tayron eHybrid can travel around 528 miles (850 kilometers).

Inside, the Tayron features a prominent 15-inch touchscreen that takes center stage on the dashboard. The digital instrument cluster for the driver measures 10.25 inches, although a screen for the passenger is notably absent. This modern setup comes with touch sliders for adjusting temperature and volume, a change from traditional buttons. Some users may appreciate this modernity, while others might miss the physical controls that some models like the Skoda Kodiaq still offer.

One plus for fans of physical controls is that the Tayron retains conventional buttons on the steering wheel rather than using touch-sensitive ones.

Manufactured in Wolfsburg, Germany, the Volkswagen Tayron will be available in Europe this autumn in Life, Elegance, and R-Line trims. As for the United States, the Tiguan variant is expected to arrive in the near future. For now, European buyers will get their first look at this new model at the 2024 Paris Motor Show.
