The National Assembly on Tuesday opened its first regular session of the second half of its four-year term, kicking off a 100-day run that will decide the country's next budget, test incoming cabinet ministers and launch debates over contentious legislation.
Floor votes on pending bills are set for Wednesday, followed by keynote speeches from the ruling Democratic Party and main opposition People Power Party next week.
Lawmakers will then question government officials on state affairs, with a three-week parliamentary audit set for October.
Confirmation hearings for six cabinet nominees will also take place.
The Democratic Party has pledged to finish them before Chuseok; the People Power Party has vowed rigorous vetting.
Lawmakers are also bracing to review next year's budget — a record roughly 800 trillion won, or about 580 billion U.S. dollars.
The ruling party is defending the plan as necessary stimulus, while the opposition is calling for major cuts.
Despite the friction, policy chiefs from both parties met on the first day of the regular session and pledged to fast-track legislation both sides support.
DP policy chief Kwon Chil-seung pointed to overlapping campaign pledges from the last general election.


"First, second, and third, it's about people's livelihoods. Looking back at the two parties' main pledges from the last general election, there was a lot of overlap across areas like low birth rates, public safety, protecting small business owners, and youth policy."

His PPP counterpart, Lim Lee-ja, struck a similar note on bills where the two sides disagree.


"Let's debate fiercely on bills where we differ to find reasonable common ground, and show the flexibility to boldly revise laws already in effect if problems or public inconvenience are confirmed."

The two policy chiefs agreed to meet every two weeks throughout the session.

"Both parties have pledged cooperation on shared priorities, but the confirmation hearings, budget review, and disputed bills ahead will show how far that cooperation extends.
