Korea’s Highway Rest Stops: More Than a Pit Stop

Korea’s highway rest stops are transforming from quick pit stops into must-visit destinations packed with food, fun, and local flavor.

As more foreign travelers venture beyond Seoul, their journeys are taking them along more diverse routes.
And along those routes, there is one place that has emerged as an unexpected travel attraction: highway rest stops.

Today, these stops are culinary hotspots, serving everything from walnut cakes and skewered rice cakes and sausages to tteokbokki.
But they weren’t always this way.

When the Gyeongbu Expressway opened in 1970, rest stops were little more than places to stretch your legs and grab a quick bite before getting back on the road.
The food was basic—just enough to keep hunger at bay.

Fast-forward to today, and they’ve been transformed.
They showcase regional flavors from across Korea, from hearty bowls of slow-simmered gukbap to freshly made street-food favorites.

And there’s more than just food.
Modern restrooms, dog-friendly playgrounds, and shops that could easily rival a shopping mall have turned these stops into attractions of their own.

Highway rest stops are no longer just pit stops. They’re becoming destinations—and a uniquely Korean part of the travel experience.
