The annual Eastern Economic Forum is scheduled to run throughout this week in Vladivostok and is expected to serve as a key venue for discussions involving ties among the two Koreas and Russia.
For more, were joined today by Andrew Millard, Head of Department at the Department of International Relations at Changwon National University.
1. Attention is now on whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will be at the event, with some observers saying the forum could pave the way for a North Korea-Russia summit. Whats your take on this?
2. At the same time, the forum could give South Korea and Russia a chance to improve relations, especially since they have been strained since the Ukraine war began. How might ties between Seoul and Moscow be addressed at the forum?
3. Cooperation with Russia is also crucial to the Lee administration’s plans to develop the Arctic shipping route, one of its key priorities. How likely is it that this project will progress?
4. South Korea, the U.S. and Japan are set to carry out military exercises near Jeju-do Island next week. This comes after the U.S. scaled back annual drills with Korea, and some say continuing the trilateral exercise could be seen as a sign of Washingtons commitment to trilateral security cooperation to counter China. Whats your take on this?
