A fantastic walk in the Medway Valley exploring the ancient sites of White Horse Stone, the Countless Stones & Kit's Coty dating from the neolithic era around 3000BC - 4000BC. Our walk starts at Aylesford and also takes in a short section of the North Downs Way and the Pilgrim's Way. This is a landscape full of the history of Britain from the first farming communities to the legends of the Anglo Saxon Period. Kit's Coty and the Countless Stones are the remains of two megalithic dolmen long barrow burial chambers. It seems likely that they were constructed by some of the first farming communities to settle in Southern Britain. Remains of wooden structures have been found nearby. White Horse Stone dates from the same period and at some point later became associated with the legend of Hengist and Horsa, Anglo-Saxon warriors who according the the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle fought a battle at Aylesford in 455AD against an army of Britons under the leader, Vortigern.
