Myrtle Lake, tucked within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in King County, offers a striking view of Big Snow Mountain. We chose to visit during the last week of April, when snow still lingered along the upper sections of the trail, adding a quiet, early-season character to the hike. Access via the Dingford Creek Trailhead was challenging, as the Forest Service road had been heavily damaged by winter storms, and dozens of large blowdowns across the trail had to be navigated. For those willing to put in a bit of effort to get there, the reward is substantial: a journey through some of the state’s finest old-growth forest, culminating in serene alpine scenery and a rare sense of solitude.
