Nam prik pao is a powerful ingredient in Thai cuisine. When it is called for in a recipe, there is really no good substitute because of its unique flavour. You may have had it in our famous tom yum goong soup, but add it to fried rice and it’s an instant flavour boost.

Note: I find Pantai (the brand in the video) a little too sweet but it is the only one available at the store I frequent and it’s plenty good enough. I think Maepranom brand is better. Thai Kitchen brand, though I don’t recommend their CURRY paste, their chili paste is pretty good and it’s labelled as “Roasted Red Chili Paste.”
