Trimming lidded forms to fit together is my happy place and despite my style staying within a self-imposed ‘ruleset’, there’s still a tremendous variety of shapes that can be created. The rules aren’t set in stone, rather they’re simple proportional ideas that keep the vessels leaning towards the aesthetic I like as it’s very easy to accidentally throw stumpy forms that feel heavy and squat, whereas what I’m aiming for is elegant and light, which can be a challenge considering the angular forms and large-flat lids I tend to create.
If it’s a tapered form, the lower half needs to account for at least half the overall height and the opening can’t be too much wider than the foot. The lid too can’t be too thick in comparison to the body, if it’s thrown and trimmed too thickly it can overpower the body, looking top-heavy.
The funny thing is that the thrown components often have the faults listed above, yet through the process of trimming the pots they’re greatly changed into what I have pictured in my mind.
