I really forgot just how brittle some clay bodies can be.
This black stoneware, (PF680), has been rather unforgiving, or rather, I’ve been treating leather hard pots a little roughly, or at least, in the same manner I treat my usual stoneware clay.
I made a few bowls where their rims had turned somewhat oval, now normally I can just gently squeeze the rim back into a round shape, yet with this black clay it just cracks in four places around the rim when I attempted the same thing.
Not only that, but this grogged body turns leather hard far more quickly than other clay bodies I’ve worked with, all of this means that my first round with this new material has been rather problematic. There were certainly teething issues but hopefully no more will sneak up as I biscuit fire and glaze fire it… wish me luck.
