I’ve been toying with using music in more videos lately. The kind I find myself mesmerised by are craftspeople at work with a score accompanying hands at work, so why not for a change. This week, I’m beginning a search for a black stoneware clay body, so expect blending clays, throwing them into small tea caddies and trimming them. As it turns out, this ‘smooth’ black stoneware is anything but smooth, it’s full of sharp grog and the body is actually incredibly brittle come leather hard, which makes turning it a real pain, as you’ll see in the full video.
I had to completely readjust my way of trimming, soaking the walls of the pots with a wet sponge and then refining these damp areas, otherwise all I was left with was scratchy surfaces that weren’t particularly nice. At least I know this know and the next time I make a batch of pots using this combination of materials, I’ll trim the clay when it’s on the softer side.
