In today’s video I’m tackling one of the biggest table arguments in Dungeons & Dragons: player agency vs narrative control. Players should have real agency—choices that matter and change outcomes—but that doesn’t mean players get author rights over the setting.
Here’s my line in the sand: you run your character, the DM runs the setting. Players can absolutely change the world, but they do it through actions, risk, and consequences, not by declaring new canon because “my backstory says.”
We also get into the backstory trap—when a “character concept” turns into a demand to rewrite factions, titles, bloodlines, and world truths before the dice ever hit the table. If you’ve ever felt the temperature shift when someone says, “Well, my backstory says…,” this one’s for you.
