Stop playing god and start playing a game. In modern TTRPG circles, we’re told that to be a "good" Referee, we need to pre-script every NPC encounter, decide every faction’s motivation in advance, and curate a specific "vibe" for the players to experience. But there is a massive problem with that approach:
When you pre-determine an NPC’s mood, you aren't playing a game anymore; you’re writing a novel. And if you’re writing a novel, the players are just secondary characters in your story.
