Keep on the Borderlands (B2) isn't the beginner-friendly starter module modern OSR guides keep calling it in 2026. It's a faction-play test most DMs, including me forty years ago, were never taught to pass.

The Caves of Chaos are a dozen factions living in one hillside, not a room-by-room dungeon crawl. B2 expects negotiation, reconnaissance, and retreat from a party that's barely first level, and it never explains that to the DM running it. I ran this module myself in the mid-1980s and missed all of it. Here's what the module actually assumes you already know, and what I'd run differently today.
