Today I went to my local ALDI and stocked up on foods that are focused on being pre-diabetic friendly while also helping me stay full and energized throughout the week. My goal was to buy foods that are very low in sugar while still providing healthy fats, fiber, and plenty of protein.
For protein, I picked up prime rib, frozen shrimp, ground pork, and unbreaded buffalo chicken wings that only contain 3g of carbs per serving. I also grabbed some zero-carb beef jerky for quick snacks during the day.
To help avoid sugar spikes, I bought sugar-free mints, sugar-free cranberry juice, lemon juice, sugar-free water sweetener, coffee, and stevia packets instead of regular sugary drinks or snacks.
For healthier fats and fiber, I picked up walnuts and goat cheese, along with celery and onions to use as side garnishes and to add flavor without adding a lot of carbohydrates. I also bought organic blackberries to make a small fruit salad since berries are generally one of the better fruit options for lower sugar eating plans.
I did buy oranges even though they are a little higher on the sugar index, but I usually eat one after a meal instead of by itself to help reduce blood sugar spikes.
The total grocery bill came to around $94, but the food should last me well over a week. Compared to stores like Publix or Harris Teeter, the prices at ALDI were significantly cheaper, especially for the amount of protein and healthier food options I was able to get. #aldifoodhaul
