When movies broke tradition:
Starting off we have the most recent occurrence with Toy Story 5, in a series of purely G rated installments, 5 marks the first PG-rated installment for thematic elements and rude humor.
Speaking of rating traditions, Deadpool & Wolverine introduced the 1st R rating to an MCU film. It’s also for the MCU’s 118/119 F-Bombs with the other one going to Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3
Up next is Shrek Forever After. The series' famous pop-culture parody and fairytale satire structure was dropped for a dramatic It's a Wonderful Life style alternate-universe story for better or for worse.
Pixar’s Wall-E broke their tradition of dialogue-driven buddy comedies with a first act featuring almost zero spoken dialogue that relied entirely on visual storytelling, ambient sound design, and silent-film-era physical comedy to build its narrative.
And finally we have Despicable Me which throws away traditional heroic, highly moral, or misunderstood protagonist rolls. Instead we have an unironic supervillain as this films comedic anchor. Sure he technically becomes good but the traditional heroism has still disappeared.
