Feeding time!
The foam nest keeps the mountain chicken tadpoles guarded while they grow. Every other day the female feeds the tadpoles with eggs that she carefully pushes into the nest with her hind legs. If you look closely, you can see something moving in the foam.
The mountain chicken frog is one of the largest frogs in the world. Today it’s listed as critically endangered and can only be found in the wild on the Caribbean island Dominica Local and international conservationists together with governments NGOs on Montserrat and Dominica are working to save the species from extinction through monitoring and safe guarding remnant populations and ex-situ breeding.
