St. Augustine was an unexpected highlight for us! Before we came to Northern Florida, none of us had ever heard of this place. But, as it turns out, this city offers a lot for travelers!
St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States. The Spanish first settled it in 1565! That's more than 100 years before the 13 colonies.
What's great is this history is very well preserved, and therefor very accessible for tourism. We enjoyed the old city gate, the oldest street in the country (St. Aviles) and of course the 300 year old fort, right down by the water.
With the two cities being so close, we chose to explore here, rather than Jacksonville. We think we made the right choice!
