Everyone knows Moses was Israelite. Raised in Pharaoh's court, sure, but born Hebrew, rescued from the Nile by Pharaoh's daughter, and destined to lead his people out of Egypt. That is the story. But what if it's backwards?
Dr. Aaron Adair joins Derek Lambert (MythVision Podcast) to present the evidence that Moses was originally an Egyptian figure, an Egyptian folk hero, who was later adopted into Israelite tradition and recast as the founder of their nation.
The evidence starts with the name itself. "Moses" is not a Hebrew name. The Bible's own etymology, that Pharaoh's daughter named him because she "drew him out" of the water, doesn't actually work in Hebrew. The name is Egyptian. Adair's peer-reviewed research, published in the Scandinavian Journal of the Old Testament in 2025, proposes that the best candidate for the name is the Demotic Egyptian word mšꜥ, but critically, this word only fits the Hebrew form Mōše in the late Persian period or later. That means the name "Moses" was incorporated into the Exodus narrative no earlier than the Hellenistic era, centuries after the events the story claims to describe.
But the name is just the beginning. When you look at the broader evidence, including the Egyptian traditions about Moses preserved by writers like Manetho, the pattern of how folk heroes get adopted across cultures in the ancient world, and the way the biblical text itself preserves traces of Moses's Egyptian identity while trying to overwrite it with an Israelite one, a very different picture emerges. Moses didn't leave Egypt. He started there. And the Israelite tradition that claimed him as their own was performing an act of cultural adoption that has parallels across the ancient Mediterranean.
