Deanna Powell did not just grow up going to church on Sundays. Christianity was her entire world.
Raised in a strict Independent Fundamental Baptist home, Deanna’s life was shaped by church, Christian school, and family ministry from the very beginning. Her dad started a Christian school in their church, later became principal of her private Christian elementary school, and went on to teach Bible and math at Bellevue Christian School in Kirkland, Washington. Her parents also helped start a PCA church, where they led the music. Christianity was not just a belief system. It was the air she breathed every day of her life.
At just 6 years old, Deanna asked Jesus into her heart and got baptized. But instead of peace, she was haunted by fear, especially the terror of hell. As she grew older, the doubts, contradictions, hypocrisy, and unanswered questions never really went away. They were always there under the surface, even as cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias kept her locked inside the faith she had inherited.
After years of pain, including three failed marriages and experiences of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, Deanna finally began asking the questions she had spent a lifetime avoiding. Then came 2016. Watching Christians, including her own parents, support Donald Trump became the breaking point that shattered what was left of her faith. What followed was a long, slow, honest process of deconstruction that eventually led her out of Christianity and into agnostic atheism and humanism.
Today, Deanna is a single mom by choice, had her oldest daughter through IVF with donor sperm, later became a single foster mom, and eventually adopted two siblings placed in her care. She is also a real estate agent in the Seattle area and the host of the Intrepid Storytelling podcast, where she shares powerful and inspiring human stories.
In this conversation, Deanna shares her journey out of lifelong Christianity, the fear and trauma that shaped her early years, the personal experiences that forced her to confront the truth, and what life looks like on the other side of faith.
