Who was Jesus? A Jewish prophet? A divine being sent from heaven? God himself in human flesh? The answer depends on which book of the New Testament you read.
Mark's Jesus seems to deny being God. Paul's Jesus is "Lord" but God is still the Father. Matthew and Luke add miraculous births but keep Jesus subordinate to the Father. John's Jesus declares "before Abraham was, I am" and presents himself as the pre-existent Word through whom the universe was created. These are not minor differences. These are fundamentally different answers to the most important question in Christianity, and they all exist within the same collection of texts.
The scholarly debate over how Jesus went from being a Jewish teacher executed by Rome to being worshipped as God is one of the most contested questions in New Testament studies. Was high Christology there from the very beginning, as Larry Hurtado and Richard Bauckham argue? Did it develop gradually over decades, as Bart Ehrman and James Dunn have proposed? Did different early Christian communities hold competing views of who Jesus was, views that were never fully harmonized even within the New Testament canon?

When early Christians called Jesus "Son of God," they were using a title that already existed in the Roman Empire. Augustus Caesar was divi filius, son of the divine, on every coin in circulation. Greek heroes like Heracles and Perseus were sons of gods. The Hellenistic world was full of divine men, miracle workers, and figures who bridged the gap between human and divine. Understanding Jesus's titles in that context changes what "Son of God" meant to the people who first used it, and it is very different from what modern Christians assume.

How you answer it determines whether Christianity's central claim, that Jesus is God, goes back to Jesus himself or is something the church constructed over decades and centuries, drawing from both Jewish and Greco-Roman categories to elevate a human teacher to divine status.
