Montane Extreme Smock outdoor test with a short winter hike in the mountains.
Having tried many winter jackets and layering setups whilst out hiking and wild camping in the winter I thought I would try something a little different this year.
Having seen reviews online recommending pile fleece jackets as a one layer system I thought I would buy this smock and give it a test this winter whilst out on my trips.
I am one of the worst for not adding or removing layers as I get hot or cold especially in winter so the idea of a single, do it all jacket is certainly appealing.
Along with the Montane Extreme Smock are the Buffalo Jackets from Buffalo Systems which are more or the same concept with many interesting videos and reviews online as well.
The principle is that your body heats up the pile and any water that permeates the outer is deflected by the pile layer. Also in a similar way any sweat from your body is wicked away to the outer shell.
Depending on conditions it may still be necessary to have a waterproof outer shell over the top but this could still work out lighter than what I would normally carry.
It will be interesting to see how good it works when static for many hours in a cold winter environment whilst wild camping or stopping to take landscape photographs.
So will this jacket prove to be the best clothing for extreme winter conditions?

Backpacking & wild camping trip to try and complete all 11 Munro summits around Glenshee over 36 Hours with one night wild camping.
Did know my latest challenge was going to be hard going but by the time I got to the end I hadnโt realised just how demanding. For the majority of the trip weather was on my side and the scenery stunning as always.
Overall a fantastic mini adventure and enjoyed every minute of it although suffering and aching for a good part of it. Most folks could do the route a lot quicker and easier, but stopping to film and compose shots takes a lot of time and adds to an already long distance day.
One thing I did learn from the trip is to take a lot higher energy snacks to help boost my energy levels as I did not take nearly enough to eat for the amount of effort required as it did make me feel a bit ill at times.
