Our White Coat Ceremony is always a joyous moment for everyone involved. The new students feel like they have finally realized their dream and started their journey through veterinary school. The rest of us get to soak up their elation, provide a bit of advice, and acknowledge the hard work they put in to get to UC Davis. The best part might be seeing the pride of the parents and families as they see their students transformed by the white coats they are wearing from the ceremony.
We're especially proud that 57% of the Class of 2029 is first-generation, a record for us. This has been the goal of land-grant universities since the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890: to provide educational opportunities to anyone ambitious enough to pursue them.
A big part of our success is from so many of you helping to make UC Davis more affordable. While we have worked to keep tuition and fee increases low, donors have successfully increased student aid every year. When student aid is added in, we are easily one of the most affordable schools in the country.
This affordability means that anyone can attend—and then choose to pursue additional studies and training or a professional path in rural areas, public health or other meaningful but less-lucrative careers.
One example of this is our alumni speaker this year, Dr. Sean Gadson. Sean is a first-generation graduate of the school who completed advanced training and now practices emergency medicine and helps mentor pre-vet students. He and Dean Mark Stetter teamed up to co-host this episode of Minute with Mark to meet the Class of 2029. We hope you enjoy it.
