Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan is headed for the U.S. today for G20 talks on AI innovation and investment.
Lee Ju-yeon has more.
South Korea's Minister of Trade, Industry, and Resources, Kim Jung-kwan, departed for the U.S. on Tuesday for a four-day trip through North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Louisiana to boost bilateral economic ties.
Minister Kim will attend the G20 Innovation Ministerial Meeting in North Carolina on Wednesday, focusing primarily on global cooperation for AI innovation.
Then, on Thursday, he will co-host an investment reporting ceremony with the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency in Washington, D.C.
The event aims to attract foreign direct investment from U.S. companies in semiconductors, advanced materials, and offshore wind power, while also gathering feedback and updates on their existing projects in Korea.
On Friday, Minister Kim will attend the groundbreaking ceremony of the Hyundai-POSCO Louisiana steel mill.
Hyundai Motor Group plans to invest a total of 26 billion dollars in the U.S. by 2028, across steel, automotive, and robotics industries.
Experts suggest that this move could help contribute to the establishment of stable supply chains across North America.
"With Hyundai Steel holding a 50% stake, POSCO 20%, and Hyundai Motor and Kia 15% each, steelmakers and automakers are joining hands to build a U.S. manufacturing base. Unlike a conventional joint venture, this serves as a strategic FDI that links the entire supply chain from raw material production to automotive manufacturing."
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Resources also unveiled its 2027 budget proposal on Tuesday, which is set at a record 9.65 billion U.S. dollars.
Within the budget is a new program dedicated to addressing U.S. trade issues and building a foundation for strategic investment cooperation. This will assist with the seamless execution of strategic U.S. investments and response to volatile tariff policies.
Seoul committed to a 350-billion-dollar U.S. investment package, with 150 billion dollars earmarked for shipbuilding, in last year's bilateral trade deal.
As the two nations negotiate specific projects for the remaining 200 billion dollars, speculation looms over what Minister Kim's visit will achieve.

![[On-point] How Nepal floods highlight growing glacier risks in warming Himalayas
네팔 참사, 지구 위험 신호? 기후변화에 녹는 빙하
Preliminary investigations have pointed to a collapsed glacier as the cause of the flash flood on the Nepal-Tibet border, highlighting the issue of rapidly melting Himalayan ice.
For more, were joined today by Professor Kim Hyung-jun, Director at KAIST Institute for Climate-Environment-Energy.. and Head of the Department of AI & Futures Studies.
1. Local trekking guides and climbers say theyve witnessed rapid losses of snow and ice in the Himalayas over the past several years. Scientists are still working to determine exactly what caused the disaster, but could climate change have played a role in making this disaster more severe?
2. Some experts warn that rapid construction of massive infrastructure across the Himalayas by India, China, and Nepal increased the regions vulnerability to a disaster like this. Do you think this could have amplified the impact of the flooding?
3. Chinese authorities have warned that a lake formed by the landslide is at high risk of bursting and sending more floodwater downstream. How serious is the threat of a secondary disaster?
4. As Himalayan glaciers continue to melt and extreme rainfall becomes more frequent, are catastrophic floods like this becoming the new normal across the region?
5. Could this disaster have been prevented, or at least its impact reduced? And what kind of disaster monitoring or early warning systems are needed to prevent another catastrophe like this?
Alright, Professor Kim, thanks for coming on today.
