Korea saw its highest-ever exports for any August, as global demand for artificial intelligence continues to drive strong demand for Korea's memory chips.
Park Jun-han breaks down the latest trade figures.
Korea's outbound shipments are showing continued growth, with the highest exports for any August and the third-highest monthly figure in the country's trade history.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources on Tuesday, exports in August stood at 98-point-2-5 billion U.S. dollars.
That is a 68-point-7 percent jump compared to the same month last year, marking the third consecutive month that exports have topped the 90 billion dollar mark.
With imports rising by 22-point-5 percent to 63-point-5-1 billion dollars, Korea posted a trade surplus of 34-point-7-5 billion dollars for the month.
The undisputed driver behind this export rally is semiconductors.
Chip exports skyrocketed by 209 percent year-on-year, hitting a record 46-point-6-5 billion dollars.
Global tech giants like Alphabet's Google and Amazon are heavily expanding their data centers and AI infrastructure, keeping the demand for Korean memory chips incredibly strong.
Other tech products also saw massive gains.
Computer exports jumped by 419-point-5 percent, reaching 6-point-2-4 billion dollars.
This was largely driven by rising prices for solid-state drives, which are essential for enterprise data storage.
Mobile communication devices also saw a solid 21-point-2 percent increase, boosted by strong global sales of Samsung Electronics' new flagship models like the Galaxy S26 series and the latest foldables.
However, not all sectors enjoyed the robust exports.
Passenger car exports dropped by 30 percent during the same period.
Despite the dip in the auto sector, overall daily average exports still surged by 72-point-5 percent, sitting above 4 billion dollars for the fourth consecutive month.
With global demand for Korean AI memory chips remaining strong, the country's record exports signal that its broader economic momentum remains robust.

남부 계속 폭염 특보, 곳곳 비와 소나기
Tomorrow, well have mostly cloudy skies across the country, with rain and showers in the forecast.
Through the morning, parts of inland Gangwon-do Province and the Chungcheong-do provinces could see up to around 20 millimeters of rain.
And through the evening, showers will move through the Chungcheong-do provinces and southern regions, bringing 5 to 50 millimeters.
