We found this stunning Brachypelma auratum — the Mexican Flame Knee tarantula — in its natural habitat in Mexico! Often confused with the famous Mexican Red Knee tarantula (Brachypelma hamorii), this species is actually rarer and equally beautiful.
Millions of keepers own Brachypelma tarantulas, but almost nobody has seen them in the wild. We traveled deep into Mexico's Balsas Valley to change that — 16-hour search days, flashlights in every burrow, and finally: flames emerging from the earth.

They NEVER overlap in the wild — completely different habitats. If someone sells you a "Red Knee" with flame markings only on the knees, you've got an auratum.

🕷️ WHY CHOOSE A MEXICAN FLAME KNEE?
The Brachypelma auratum is one of the most underrated Mexican tarantulas in the pet trade. While everyone searches for the Mexican Red Knee tarantula (Brachypelma hamorii) or Mexican Fireleg (Brachypelma boehmei), the Mexican Flame Knee offers the same docile temperament with even more striking coloration.
If you're looking for a beginner-friendly tarantula similar to the Mexican Red Knee, consider the Brachypelma auratum! Their care requirements are nearly identical to other Brachypelma species like B. hamorii, B. smithi, B. albopilosum (Curly Hair), and B. Emilia.

This footage was captured during our Mexico tarantula expedition where we documented several Brachypelma species in their natural environment alongside local arachnologists. Observing these tarantulas in the wild helps us create better enclosure designs that mimic their natural habitat — and reminds us why conservation matters.

All Mexican Brachypelma tarantulas are CITES Appendix II protected. Wild collection is illegal. The Flame Knees available in pet stores come from licensed captive breeding programs — and that's exactly how it should be. Always buy captive-bred.
Their wild habitat is shrinking: agricultural expansion, cattle ranching, and development are converting the Balsas dry forests into farmland every year.
