A thousand traded in a decade. Scientists can barely find them in the wild. Today, we went looking for one of Mexico's most elusive tarantulas — the Orange Beauty.
Brachypelma baumgarteni is one of only TWO Brachypelma species listed as Endangered by the IUCN. In the pet trade, they're everywhere. Captive bred, supposedly. But in the wild? They've almost completely disappeared from their tiny corner of Mexico.
We searched for hours. Burrow after burrow. Nothing. And then we found her — not where we expected. Not how we expected. This is her story.

The Orange Beauty Tarantula (Brachypelma baumgarteni) is endemic to a tiny region of Michoacán, Mexico. Between 2006 and 2016, over a thousand were traded internationally — all reported as captive-bred. Yet field researchers struggle to find wild specimens.
This species is now protected under CITES Appendix II. We do not collect, remove, or disturb wild tarantulas. All animals filmed were left exactly where we found them.
