The tarantula you see here is a closely related species from the island of Langkawi.
As seen in this case, common names are frequently deceptive. Isn't Earth Tiger the wrong name for a tree-dwelling tarantula?
It's much easier to communicate across language barriers with your international friends if you use scientific names - Omothymus is Omothymus in every language.
These massive tarantulas have leg spans of over 22cm and carapace lengths of 3cm, making them among the largest to roam the forest ceiling and far larger than their New World counterparts.
Join today to learn more about the Omothymus species native to Langkawi.

Urticating hairs are unique within certain groups of New world tarantulas native to the Americas.
These teeny tiny hairs are ready to be flicked with their rear legs or pedipalps. You can even spot some remaining hairs on the legs!
These hairs are very effective against predators with sensitive noses, such as bigger mammals for example.
There are different types of urticating hairs and a lot of species have two or more different types on their body. Some for defense to be flicked, others to be woven into their egg sack for protection against small insects.

On our tarantula expeditions, we often find wild tarantulas with missing legs. A very common sight and it doesn’t bother the spider too much.
Spider leg muscles have the ability to close the open wound immediately. Additionally, spiders are able to break away their own leg with a mechanism called Autotomy. It restricts bleeding altogether and the spider can go on its way, unharmed.
The beauty of nature never ceases to amaze me. Follow our tarantula work and expedition on our website birdspiders.ch

Unlike their bigger counterparts, these small tarantula species which only reach a few inches in size, only live around 10 years - still a remarkable age for an invertebrate!
Since everything is based on perspective, these tiny tarantulas are still giants among other insects on the rainforest floor!

Under the protection of the dull brown spinifex grass, in the security of ancient rocks and solid green protections, the little jewels from the Andes roam the landscape. Even though they are tarantula spiders these individuals appear to be on the smaller end of the scale.
But they might always remember that their bigger cousins, the Goliath Bird Eating Tarantula is just a few thousand meters down the hill and some hundred kilometers away in the Amazon basin. Who was first? The Giant tarantula from the lush tropical forest walking up the hills and getting smaller in thousands of years of evolution? Or did these dwarf excavators walk down from the cold mountain tops down to the lush green forests and evolve into something bigger? This and many more questions regarding the ecology of these outstanding spiders are still unknown, that’s why young people with fascination are needed to find out more about them.

In this episode we showcase four different species of tarantulas of which not a single one has a scientific name, meaning that it is still an undescribed species and new to science. This is not all luck - this is weeks and months of preparation for a field trip like this. It's a passion we are proud of to share with all of you.

Tarantulas tend to be on the quiet side of pets and animals in general, but some tarantulas have the ability to stridulate, meaning that they can and will hiss at you when felt threatened. Some species are as loud as a rattle snake and you can hear them throughout the room!
The King Baboon Tarantula is no exception and has an amazing sound and attitude when it comes to their defense mechanism. Learn more about the different types of stridulation organs, which are also used as taxonomic identifiers to separate species and genera. Something new to learn about these amazing animals every day!

In this video, we shine the light on this beautiful blue-yellow, and pink dwarf tarantula from the genus Typhochlaena, which has not yet any common name, and highlight natural history data, field studies, and a general overview about Typhochlaena and its sister species.
Typhochlaena curumim is another species that has the same status as T. costae, making it extremely sought after in the tarantula community. Luckily, both of these species have been bred very successfully and scientific & enthusiast literature gives all of us who are interest in this genus, additional information.

The most fascinating part of this Agnostopelma tota, documented near Lake Tota, is their sheer lack of motivation to move. THEY ARE SLOW. Like all the time - it seems they can't be quick and even throw their urticating hairs at such slow speeds that we doubt they even get lost from their abdomen.

Abstract of the publication:
The tarantula genus Brachypelma includes colourful species that are highly sought after in the commercial pet trade.
They are all included in CITES appendix II. We present phylogenetic analyses using molecular and morphological
characters to revise Brachypelma, in which we include all currently known species. Our results agree with
a previous study that shows the non-monophyly of Brachypelma. Both phylogenies strongly favour the division
of Brachypelma into two smaller genera. The first clade (Brachypelma s.s.) is formed by B.albiceps, B. auratum, B. baumgarteni, B. boehmei, B. emilia, B. hamorii, B. klaasi and B. smithi. The species included in the second clade are transferred to the new genus Tliltocatl and is formed by T. albopilosum comb. nov., T. epicureanum comb. nov., T. kahlenbergi comb. nov., T. sabulosum comb. nov., T. schroederi comb. nov., T. vagans comb. nov.
and T. verdezi comb. nov. Both genera can be differentiated by their coloration and the shape of the genitalia. We
transfer to Tliltocatl: T. alvarezi, T. andrewi and T. aureoceps, but should be considered as nomina dubia. In addition,
we transfer B. fossorium to Stichoplastoris. We discuss the implications of these taxonomical changes for CITES and
for the Mexican Laws for wildlife protection.

Longhorn, S. J. & Gabriel, R. (2019). Revised taxonomic status of some Mexican and Central American tarantulas (Araneae: Theraphosidae), with transfers from Aphonopelma Pocock, 1901, and a new genus from the Pacific lowlands of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Arachnology 18(2): 101-120. doi:10.13156/arac.2018.18.2.101
Even though there is potentially a new species in this huge distribution range, we will cover the Zebra Tarantula, Aphonopelma seemanni in this episode in a little more detail.
Aphonopelma seemanni makes a great pet tarantula, just make sure you give them the substrate to dig their deep burrows, that way they will also stay calm and don't react very defensive.
Get inspired by the nature of Costa Rica and maybe build your next enclosure for Aphonopelma seemanni a little different.
Disclaimer: No spiders were hurt or illegally harvested for this documentary. Aphonopelma aberrans is nomen dubia since 2013 which I totally forgot, let's blame the sun and heat for my mistake... or just myself :)

Searching for tarantulas is not always successful - something we have to learn over and over again. On some days you find four different tarantula species, then on others - not a single spider.
This short video guides you through different vegetation zones, looking for Aphonopelma seemanni, Aphonopelma crinirufum and Davus ruficeps in a tropical dry zone kind of area.

Tarantulas are very well documented in this country, so let's find out together if there will be new tarantula species to be discovered or already known tarantula species documented in the first place. You can also use this video to scape your dart frog setup or your poison dart frog terrarium in generall.
Find out in this very spontaneous tarantula in the wild documentary and see how many tarantula species the team of birdspidersCH is going to find!
Also there will be some surprises, regarding the team and of course regarding tarantulas... so stay tuned and let us know how you like the new edit style which is less scripted but more "raw" and therefore maybe a little cringe or silly.

Ceratogyrus attonitifer is a new species described by the arachnologist Ian Engelbrecht.
This baboon tarantula is native to the country of Angola and has an astonishing horn - something we've never seen before, covering almost the entire opisthosoma of the baboon tarantula spider.
It's remarkable - watch the video, enjoy its beauty and let's hope for more pictures and videos of this new baboon tarantula species soon!
