The Mercedes eSprinter has been in series production since December, according to Daimler. Mercedes-Benz Vans has invested a total of around 330 million euros in the technical expansion of production in recent years, already in advance of the production of the new Sprinter and the new drive system variants, taking into account the fact that, in the future, both conventionally operated and fully electric vehicles will be built on a single production line.
The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is designed to be as flexible as feasible in terms of urban mobility. As a result, it will first be available as a panel van with a high roof and a maximum gross weight of 3,500 kilogrammes. It has the same 10.5 m3 maximum loading volume as the Sprinter with a combustion engine. The electric motor of the eSprinter drives the front wheels with an output of 85 kW and a torque number of up to 300 Newton metres, similar to the entry-level diesel engine.
Furthermore, because the user can choose between three or four battery units, a variable payload and battery concept allows for adaptability to specific needs for practical application. With a battery capacity of 55 kWh and a maximum payload of 891 kilogrammes, its range is estimated to be 168 kilometers. A second battery choice considers additional priorities in the use parameters: three rather than four 35 kWh battery packs allow for a range of roughly 115 kilometers 1, 2. In exchange, the maximum payload is increased by about 140 kilogrammes to around 1040 kilogrammes. More flexibility is provided by the incorporated fast-charging function; 80 percent of the battery charge may be recharged in 30 minutes. The peak speed can be set to 80 km/h, 100 km/h, or even 120 km/h, depending on the work at hand.
