A gap jump is when you jump off of the wall next to a ladder, then turn the other direction and land in the gap between the top of the ladder, allowing you to wall kick up it instead of wasting time climbing the ladder.
One of the easier ones to do is this one on the second ladder in Kuwanger. You save roughly 10-12 frames each time you nail a gap jump, or so I'm told.
