This is a story about Mr. and Mrs. Banks who live in England with their four children, Jane, Michael, John, and Barbara. The family is in need of a nanny, and so a woman named Mary Poppins is hired. Mary exhibits unusual abilities, like sliding up the bannister and producing objects out of her handbag.
On her day off, Mary visits Bert, a street painter and match-man, and the two of them magically enter one of his chalk drawings and spend the day in Fairyland.
Mary also takes Jane and Michael to visit her Uncle Wigg for a magical tea party in the air.
When Jane gets an earache and is stuck in bed for the day, Michael sees a cow in the neighborhood. Mary tells the children that the cow is a dancing cow who is looking for a star.
Michael is in a bad mood one day and Mary takes the children around the world using her magical compass.
Mary spends a day with the twins, John and Barbara, and they speak to a local bird. Mary and the bird explain to the twins that they will soon forget how to communicate with animals and nature, but the twins insist that they will always remember. However, as with all children, by their first birthday, they have forgotten all about the bird and the bird flies away crying.
During a full moon, the children walk to the zoo and find that the animals are walking around freely, while people are held in cages because it happens to be Mary’s birthday.
Mary takes the children Christmas shopping and they meet Maia, one of the seven Pleiades, a star cluster. Maia buys gifts for her sister stars and ascends to the sky.
In the end, Mary flies away, leaving Jane with a picture of her and Michael with a compass.
