Stuart and his brother, George, get along fine, while Stuart runs into some trouble with Snowball, the Little’s pet cat.
One day, Stuart walks to the park and sees a model ship race. He inquires with a ship owner, who asks Stuart if he can steer the boat in a race.
Stuart’s boat struggles during the race, but wins due to Stuart’s quick thinking.
One day, Mrs. Little takes in a hurt bird named Margalo, who recovers and becomes friends with Stuart. Stuart even protects her from Snowball one evening by shooting him with a tiny bow and arrow.
Stuart accidentally falls into a trash can and is put on a barge headed out toward sea. Just as things look bad, Margalo appears and rescues him.
One night, Snowball and a cat from the street talk about Snowball’s homelife and the street cat plans on eating Margalo. However, a pigeon overhears them talking and warns Margalo, which causes her to run away.
Stuart leaves home to search for Margalo and borrows a miniature car that turns invisible from his dentist. As Stuart drives around, he is offered a chance to substitute teach and teaches a class of students for a day.
Stuart arrives in a town and is told there is a girl named Harriet in the town around his size. Stuart writes a letter to Harriet, inviting her to go canoeing with him.
Harriet meets Stuart near a stream, but Stuart’s canoe is destroyed, and they part ways.
In the end, Stuart continues traveling north to find Margalo.
