This is a story about a girl named Flora, a self-proclaimed cynic and comic book fan, who lives with her mother, a writer.
Flora notices that the neighbor’s powerful vacuum cleaner sucks up a squirrel in their yard and after resuscitating the squirrel, the squirrel, named Ulysses, gains super strength and human understanding.
Flora meets William, the neighbor’s grand-nephew who believes he’s blind, and the two of them see if Ulysses is a superhero.
Flora’s mother is disgusted by Ulysses, especially after he types a poem on her typewriter.
Flora’s father arrives to pick her up for the day, and Flora’s mother wants Flora’s father to kill Ulysses with a shovel.
Flora and her father eat at a restaurant, but Ulysses draws some attention and quickly causes a commotion.
Ulysses hits his head trying to escape and Flora and her father take Ulysses to get help.
Flora’s father brings Ulysses to a doctor who lives in his apartment building and Ulysses recovers.
Flora’s father brings back Flora and Ulysses to Flora’s mother’s house and during an argument, Flora decides she wants to live with her father.
Flora’s mother is upset, but apologizes and decides that Flora and Ulysses are welcome in her home.
However, one night, as Ulysses is typing, Flora’s mother kidnaps him and takes him to the woods to kill him.
Flora panics when she can’t find Ulysses and searches for him with the help of William and their neighbor.
Ulysses escapes from Flora’s mother and flies to Flora’s father’s apartment.
Flora reunites with Ulysses at her father’s apartment and Flora’s mother arrives and apologizes for her actions.
In the end, Flora and her family get along and Ulysses continues to write stories on the typewriter.
