Marvekous - Another Treasure Island is an Adventure-Puzzle RPG for the Super NIntendo/Famicom. It was Developed and Published by Nintendo, Nintendo Research & Development 2. The English Fan-Translation was released in 2018 by DackR after finishing a previous (not finished) patch that was started by Tashi and released in 2012.

NOTE: This game is something really different for the SNES/SFC usual RPG/Adventure genre, it's certainly one of those hidden gems for the system that should be played by everyone.

STORY: 20/20
A group of kids and a couple of group leader adults head to an island that's infested with pirates looking for the treasure of a famous Pirate who hid his treasure on the island. The treasure is guarded by a group of monkeys who hand over three mysterious keys to your three party members. You set out on a puzzle filled adventure that explores the entire island to gain the long lost treasure before the greedy pirates find it.

GRAPHICS: 20/20
Move over ALTTP, a new cartoon looking puzzle adventure game is here, and it's graphics are just amazing. With an awesome mix of ALTTP, Secret of Mana, and even Young Merlin this game's graphics are top notch and even look like its a new game of today. Animations are really well thought out, character design of every NPC and even your characters you play are very unique and look great, even the monsters, enemy, monkeys, and even the surroundings of the island look amazing. I absolutely can't fault this game graphically for the system at all, though I suppose there are some people that might not like these type of bright cartoony graphics.

SOUND: 20/20
The game's OST is enjoyable, I didn't hear any music that was annoying or made me want to play my own music. I mean, it's not 'Final Fantasy 3' epic but it's still great. The game's sound effects are nice also, there's many of them to hear as you explore the huge island solving puzzles as you go. I really can't think of anything else to say about the sound other than I think I really liked it.

GAMEPLAY: 16/20
Okay, as much as I love the gameplay it's not for everyone, it's kind of a mixed bag of Zelda 3 - ALTTP, and maybe something like Young Vikings? where you control more than one character at a time and each one has something that can help the other characters or progress the puzzles by swapping them out for the next, there's a LOT of swapping. The controls I found quite confusing at first but gradually started to get used to them the more I played. The game consists of you exploring an island , playing mini-games to advance the story and finding items to progress even further.

Each one of your three characters are unique and carry certain items that make each better than the other at certain things so there's a lot of swapping about, sometimes it gets a little to much too. The puzzles can be anywhere from easy to near impossible to solve unless you trial and error for ages to figure it out, this can be frustrating at times. Some puzzles are given clues that just completely don't make sense in the logic sense so sometimes you are forced to use a guide, there's no way around that.. especially if you suck at puzzle solving.

Navigating the menu system is easy enough once you learn the button functions. You can collect yellow crystals that also act as a few different things, mostly for trading but there are a few puzzles that will require so many of them, like the ship's machine room switch puzzle that requires 10 to turn it on. Not only is there puzzle solving character switching present, there's also a window command system where you control a pointer to examine an area you are in closer.. so it kind of has an old PC feel of point and click game too. This game really does have a lot going on.

TRANSLATION: 20/20
The translation is great, no errors, graphical glitches, or even game breaking bugs that I cam across. The story is well written and really enjoyable. Tashi started something incredible in 2012 and DackR took that incomplete translation and made it a fantastic fan-translated game on the system.

OVER ALL: 96/100
This game is great, another great example of what the system was able to achieve, not only showcasing a different side to RPG games on the system. DO I recommend it now? HELL YEAH! it's a great puzzle game.
