The Markfield Beam Engine is located in its original engine house adjacent to the River Lea in Tottenham, North London. It was built by Wood Brothers of Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire and put into service in 1888. It was used to pump sewage from the Tottenham area to the treatment works at Beckton. It is a 100hp compound steam beam engine operating twin pumps each capable of moving two million gallons of sewage per day. Its operating speed is 16 rpm. It has been restored to full working order and periodically operates under steam for the general public.
