Rafael Freyre mill in the far east of the island was by far the most scenic line and a must visit for all steam enthusiasts. The only problem was it was a long way from Havana and involved a sometimes harrowing drive along Cuba's one and only autopista. This two lane highway had the dubious benefit of slow moving vehicles such as horse carts and tractors coming towards you on the wrong side of the road, suicidal cyclists were another hazard especially after dark. The final trick the autopista had up its sleeve was that it was unfinished. It just came to a dead stop against a pile of earth when construction halted after the fall of Communism in the USSR. traffic was expected to turn off onto an un-signed and at night, un-lit side road. The trip was however always worth the effort.
