I do occasionally buy things from marketplaces other than eBay (the place where I buy the things I later regret™). Case in point: someone in the DC Area Vintage Computing group shared a listing for a PowerMac G4 and an NEC CRT Monitor for $10. Even better, it was only 45 minutes away (or so I initially thought).
Turns out the seller forgot to put "each" in the listing (so it's going to cost $20, still a deal), and the seller is about 10 minutes away from the center of the town in the listing, so my adventure was three hours total from the time I left work until I had the car unloaded.
That's because of two things: First, the seller had four five-gallon buckets of scrap parts, and they let me take whatever I wanted from them for another $10. (I grabbed enough fill a 12x12x12 box when I got home, plus two keyboards.) And second, Maps routed me through Orange, VA as the fastest way to get home, so I "had no choice" but to finally stop by 6R's Entertainment Yard, meet the owner in-person, and pick up two Nintendo cartridges. (Not only is 6R's an arcade, but they buy/sell/trade vintage games.)
Which G4 is it, and will it chime? Will the CRT monitor work? Will any of the scrap rescues work or be good repair candidates? Which video games did I buy? You'll have to watch to find out!

![COMPUTER Repair: My MCA Apple ][+ Clone Needs a Power Supply & 3 Sockets! (Computerized Start™ Live)
Back in September, I got COMPUTER, my Apple ][+ clone from MCA of Japan, powering up to the BASIC prompt. To do so, however, I had to disconnect the keyboard and use another Apples power supply. I think I have what I need to solve both problems.
The power supply was easy: just buy another power supply on eBay (the place where I buy the things I later regret™). I have a cap kit on-hand, thanks to the magic of buying the wrong kit for another project, so well go ahead and recap it.
The keyboard might be even easier: I should have used sockets without a lip for the three sockets that have cables installed into them: the keyboard, the joystick/paddle port, and the memory chip at E3. I purchased some sockets that should fit the cables that go into these sockets, allowing the cables to make and maintain good contact.
Will I get the power supply re-capped without drama? Will I swap the correct three sockets? Will COMPUTER still boot? Youll have to watch to find out!

![Macintosh SE/30: Blast from the Past [WordPerfect] Processing? (Computerized Start™ Live)
I found an SE/30 on eBay (the place where I buy the things I later regret™) that looked like a good candidate: it was auction format, the auction end time was during the day, and most importantly, there was no rust visible on the I/O ports. $208 total later (gotta pay shipping and tax), and this SE/30 has landed in the basement.
Last time we looked at this SE/30, we completed the recap and cleaned the floppy drive. Tonight, were going to test everything. And if it works, well launch the original install of WordPerfect to see how perfectly it can make my words...
Will it chime after the recap? Will the floppy drive work? Will WordPerfect for the Mac be a treat to use? Youll have to watch to find out!

![My UMC U5SX 486-33F: Does Windows 98SE Detect It as a Pentium MMX? (Computerized Start™ Live)
Youve probably heard of Intel and AMD processors, as both manufacturers are still in business today. If youve been into computing long enough, youve probably also heard of Cyrix. All three companies made 486 processors for Socket 1-3 systems.
But did you know that UMC also made 486 processors? No? That partly might be because Intel sued patent infringement, and as a result of the settlement of the case, UMC had to withdraw their processors from the US market. That might also be because they only made 486SX-era processors, not leaving a huge window for sales in other markets; Wikipedia mentions that they did have a clock-doubled version in production, but only engineering samples existed.
Speaking of Wikipedia, someone has added a claim with no footnote or citation:
Due to an error in the microcode, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition identifies some processors as an Intel Pentium MMX which could cause the operating system and software running within it to crash or exhibit undefined behavior.
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMC_Green_CPU, accessed December 30, 2025)
To which I have to say, [citation needed].
Since I now have a UMC Green CPU, specifically the UMC U5SX 486-33F, I can actually try to put this to the test... or all the Windows installs will put me to the test! We got Windows 95 and Windows 98 First Edition, then had trouble getting Windows 98 Second Edition installed.
Tonight, Im going to try to get Windows 98SE installed, but by doing a fresh install instead of an update.
Will Windows 98SE detect my UMC 486 as a Pentium MMX? Or will I have trouble installing Windows 98SE on this unsupported system configuration? Youll have to watch to find out!
