NFL lessons for small business owners.
Three pairs of approaches, six coaches, three succeeded, three failed:
1. Culture + Systems vs. Culture Alone
Campbell: Authentic leader + offensive guru Ben Johnson = structure underneath culture. Engagement + systems = 17% productivity increase. Meyer: Intensity without systems = 13 games, fired. Farming parallel: CSA community loyalty only works when you're tracking if it makes money. Good vibes ≠ business model.
2. Flexible Systems vs. Rigid Systems
Shanahan: Adapts offense to players (Garoppolo, Purdy, McCaffrey), two Super Bowls. Rule: College system forced on NFL pros = 11-27 record. Farming parallel: Beautiful spreadsheets mean nothing if you can't pivot when hailstorm destroys lettuce. Systems save 91 hours/year (15 min daily), but blocking $5K opportunity costs more than they save. Systems are servants, not masters.
3. Fundamentals + Evolution vs. Fundamentals Only
Vrabel: Took year off after Tennessee, studied what he missed, came back different. Patriots 4-13 → 14-3 in one year. Fangio: Best defensive coordinator, terrible head coach. Specialist promoted to generalist, never expanded. Farming parallel: Successful farmers adapt every 5 years. Markets shift 5-8% annually. 2020 operation is 25-40% different landscape today. If 80%+ recognizable from 5 years ago, haven't adapted enough.
The difference = self-awareness: Campbell knew culture needed structure, Shanahan knew systems needed flexibility, Vrabel knew fundamentals needed evolution. Meyer thought personality was enough, Rule thought his system was enough, Fangio thought defensive excellence was enough.
Your natural strength (relationships, processes, fundamentals, growing) isn't enough alone. Question isn't "what am I good at?" — it's "what am I missing?" Find blind spot, fill it yourself or get someone else to, build something that lasts.
