On September 21, 1948, Marcel Cerdan challenged world middleweight champion Tony Zale at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, New Jersey. Cerdan, a 2-to-1 underdog, controlled much of the contest and stopped Zale after 11 rounds to become the first non-American to hold the middleweight title in the 20th century.
The bout was highly regarded at the time and later named Ring Magazine Fight of the Year. Zale was floored with a left hook to the jaw at the end of the 11th round and was helped back to his corner, after which referee Paul Cavalier stopped the fight before the 12th round began.
This colorized full-fight version presents one of boxing’s great postwar championship battles in a fresh format. It remains one of Marcel Cerdan’s defining victories and one of the most important wins of his career.
