On December 9, 1956, Carmen Basilio challenged Johnny Saxton for the world welterweight championship at War Memorial Auditorium in Syracuse, New York, USA.
In front of his hometown crowd, Basilio delivered a relentless performance, stopping Saxton by technical knockout in round 9 to capture the world welterweight title.
Basilio applied constant pressure from the opening bell, forcing Saxton into difficult exchanges and gradually breaking down the champion's resistance. By the ninth round, Saxton was absorbing sustained punishment, prompting referee Ray Miller to stop the fight.
The victory crowned Basilio as world welterweight champion and avenged his controversial decision loss to Saxton in their first meeting earlier that year.
