On June 29, 1970, Sonny Liston met Chuck Wepner at the Armory in Jersey City, New Jersey, in what would become Liston’s final professional fight. Liston controlled the action over nine rounds, and the bout was stopped after round 9 because Wepner had suffered severe cuts over both eyes.
Wepner was also knocked down in round 5 by a body shot, and the damage he absorbed included 72 stitches, a broken nose, and a cracked left cheekbone. Liston won by RTD, and the fight entered the record books as a 10th-round stoppage even though the bout ended at the end of round 9.
