For such a small machine, the Mantis Tiller makes short work of rather tough soil. In previously used beds, it is a beast! It takes a little more time in fresh soil and would probably work best if a spade were used to break it up first. For what its worth, I like Mantis, and its relative usefulness. It actually seems a little light and tends to bounce when it finds a stone. I have been using it for several years, and it is very easy to keep up the flower beds and our small vegetable garden.
