He Turned a 4x4 Truck Into a Luxury Camper - Start to Finish! ( By @thetravelingtogetherjournal )

This project follows the complete transformation of a standard 4x4 truck into a fully functional, hard-sided pop-up overland camper—designed and built by Matt from The Traveling Together Journal. From the first weld to the final coat of paint, the build showcases careful planning, technical skill, and the resourceful creativity needed to create a reliable home on wheels.
The project begins with the construction of a custom steel subframe. Matt cuts, welds, and grinds each piece, then seals the metal with Rustlok to prevent corrosion. A plywood floor is mounted on top using T-nuts, then strengthened with epoxy resin, fiberglass, and foam insulation. Lap-jointed sections and careful sanding ensure a rigid, weather-resistant base.
The walls and cab-over are created using lightweight 5 mm plywood and Douglas fir framing. Just like the floor, they’re filled with foam insulation and coated in fiberglass for strength and durability. Once the insulated shell is ready, Matt builds the pop-up roof. It operates on five heavy-duty drawer slides, spaced with aluminum bars and assisted by four gas struts—two 80-lb struts at the front and two 60-lb struts at the rear.
Three custom doors are added: a utility hatch, a rear entry door, and a large compartment called the surfboard hatch. Each door is built with Douglas fir frames, pocket screws, and fiberglass-reinforced panels. Before painting, Matt applies a fairing compound made of epoxy and glass bubbles to smooth imperfections, then uses primer and durable house paint to protect the shell from UV exposure.
Inside, the camper features a well-designed electrical system powered by a 200Ah LiFePO4 battery. The battery charges from both a 400-watt solar array and the vehicle’s alternator through a Renogy DC-to-DC charger with MPPT. A bus bar and fuse block distribute energy to lights, fans, the refrigerator, and the water pump.
Storage is optimized with custom drawers built from scrap plywood and mounted on drawer slides. The original stove, though old, is cleaned and restored, mounted with thumb screws so it can be easily removed for outdoor cooking. The toilet is modified to fit snugly in the compact interior by adjusting fittings and hardware. Matt also repurposes an old camper awning, repairing and adapting it to fit the new pop-up camper.
The build concludes with a practical surfboard rack, capable of holding boards up to 6.5 feet long. This entire project highlights Matt and Amie’s dedication to adventure travel—showing how creativity, craftsmanship, and persistence can turn a rugged truck into a comfortable, capable overland home.
