In this TTI feature, we explore an extraordinary DIY project where Lesnoy builds a fully functional underground hobbit-style cabin in just 14 days. Inspired by Middle-earth and powered by pure determination, this build turns a quiet hillside into a cozy, eco-friendly forest hideout—while most of us are still reading furniture instructions upside down.
The project begins with smart site selection. Lesnoy chooses a sloped hillside, not for drama, but for efficiency. By embedding the cabin into the earth, the structure gains natural insulation that keeps it cool in summer and warm in winter, all without electricity. The surrounding soil also acts as protection from wind and weather, while helping the cabin blend invisibly into the landscape.
Using logs for the frame and carefully stacked stones for the walls, Lesnoy relies on traditional methods instead of modern materials. No cement, no shortcuts—just patience, physics, and craftsmanship. A signature hobbit-style wooden door is built directly into the stone wall, becoming both a functional entry and a charming focal point.
Inside, the cabin comes to life with a handmade fireplace built from stone and sealed with cob—a natural mixture of clay, sand, straw, and water. This fireplace acts like a thermal battery, absorbing heat and slowly releasing it to keep the space warm long after the fire burns out. A raised wooden bed, simple furniture, and carved details add comfort while protecting against moisture.
The roof is layered with wooden planks, a moisture barrier, soil, and grass, creating a living green roof that insulates the cabin and blends it seamlessly into the forest. Outside, Lesnoy builds a traditional post-and-rail log fence without nails, stone walkways, tool storage carved into walls, firewood shelters, and even a BBQ area.
The surrounding Ukrainian forest provides nearly all building materials—oak and beech for strength, birch for lighter work, and stones and clay from the forest floor itself. The woodland environment creates a stable microclimate, though humidity and wildlife require thoughtful construction choices.
At the heart of it all is Lesnoy Sergei, a 23-year-old Ukrainian creator dedicated to bushcraft, sustainability, and living in harmony with nature. Alongside him is Tyson, his calm canine companion, supervising each step with quiet loyalty. Together, they create not just a cabin, but a peaceful way of life rooted in simplicity, skill, and respect for the forest.
